Staff Software Engineer
The Challenge
As Eventbrite continues to grow and expand its reach, the challenge of protecting our users from bad actors, collusion, inappropriate content, and financial fraud and abuse becomes increasingly important. The Risk & Fraud Engineering team works behind the scenes to ensure our creators get paid and our attendees find amazing events. Keeping ahead of fraudsters requires a balance of proactivity and reactivity and the agility to switch focus when necessary. Our Engineers make sure we keep up without our customers noticing by designing low profile data-driven solutions to the ever-changing landscape of threats.
If the idea of working on one of the highest impact teams at Eventbrite whose problem space is constantly evolving excites you, we want to hear from you!
The Team
The Risk and Fraud team is a crosscutting team that owns a platform with connections to many different parts of Eventbrite’s site. We protect everything from account creation to event payout, and we have the opportunity to impact the success of all parts of the company. The team is cross-functional, with software engineers, data scientists, data analysts, product managers and an engineering manager working together to tackle these complex problems in creative ways. We value collaboration, both with each other and with other teams, clear and proactive communication, opportunities to learn, as well as biases for action.
The Role
As a Staff Software Engineer, you will be a technical leader who helps plan the future of the Risk and Fraud platform while also helping build it yourself. You will work alongside other Staff Engineers, Data Scientists, and Analysts to determine the technical direction of the team and of our code, making recommendations that drive us towards decisions that deliver impact for our customers and build a better, more performant, and more resilient system. You will lead by example within the team, mentoring junior engineers and helping them grow along the way. You will also participate in our on-call program.
The Tech Stack
The existing tech stack is primarily written in Python with a Django framework, with some components written in TypeScript, all hosted on AWS. Other technologies we use include MySQL, DynamoDB, lambda, CDK, OpenSearch, Celery, Snowflake, Airflow, and SageMaker. You will also be a part of influencing the technical direction for the next iteration of our platform.
The Skillset
In-depth experience working with Machine Learning and in close collaboration with Data Scientists
6+ years experience as a backend or data engineer - and possibly both, with an understanding of backend web technologies, datastores, data pipelines and distributed batch-processing systems.
Expert in building high performance systems and services.
Demonstrated ability to mentor and uplevel other engineers.
Experience managing your own infrastructure. On any given day you could be working with Lambdas, Sagemaker, API Gateway, OpenSearch, DynamoDB, and much more!
Experience aligning design, product and engineering goals.
Analytical mindset – comfortable asking big questions about the system as a whole and breaking these down into smaller, testable hypotheses
Familiarity with the basic principles and activities of data science - collecting and cleaning data; extracting and evaluating features; designing, building, and training a model; evaluating results.
Unstoppable learner – Initially you may not have all the skills above, but you’re confident that you can learn what you need in very short order.
Efficient, practical programmer with a record of producing maintainable code
Ability to take initiative and produce results with great communication and collaboration skills, especially when working with cross-functional stakeholders
Desire to work on a high impact product that directly affects the success of the company as a whole
Bonus Points
Experience in an anti-abuse space in e-commerce, especially in marketplace companies, such as Fraud, Spam, Content Policy or Trust and Safety
Experience as a team lead or technical leader within a team
Experience with Python and Django
Experience with Infrastructure As Code technologies, like Terraform or CDK
