About the role
The underwriting team at Coalition is responsible for building and maintaining systems that integrate cutting-edge security data, insurance contract information, and additional proprietary data sources to assess cyber risk. You’ll be writing backend services and assisting in designing systems that apply a combination of business rules, statistical models, and machine learning to determine and monitor underwriting outcomes. Our platform comprises services written in Python and Go. We prioritize selecting the most suitable tools for each task and make pragmatic decisions to scale and decouple systems as we expand. You'll work on an extremely cross-functional team that collaborates closely both internally and externally with the larger engineering organization.
This is a remote position that can be based anywhere in the United States or Canada.
Responsibilities
Write scalable and clean code, writing unit and integration tests, shipping with high quality and confidence
Create alerts, monitors, and dashboards to ensure operational stability and observability
Lead small projects independently or working with a team of engineers for medium-large projects, collaborating with stakeholders
Skills and Qualifications
API and service development in Python and/or Go
Assess software errors with tools like Sentry, DataDog, Jaeger/Zipkin, GreyLog, or Appdynamics
Experience using multiple transports and formats (e.g., REST, gRPC, GraphQL)
Use of source control - git, svn, or perforce
Work experience in AWS or any public cloud
Work with an agile team using collaborative development tools - Atlassian Suite, GitHub, or GitLab
0-2+ years of blended internship and/or professional development experience
Computer Science or Engineering degree - related technical discipline or equivalent work experience
Bonus Points
Insurance domain experience, in particular underwriting domain experience or actuarial experience
