Senior Counsel - Privacy & Data Governance
HubSpot is looking for a business-oriented and skilled attorney to join our Data, Privacy, and Security practice on the HubSpot Legal & Compliance Team.
We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced attorney to lead our data governance and data use practice. As a key member of our Product, Engineering, Privacy, and IP Legal team, you will play a critical role in shaping and implementing our data strategy, ensuring compliance with global data protection laws and regulations, and fostering a culture of responsible data use.
Responsibilities:
Develop and implement a comprehensive data governance framework: This includes creating and maintaining policies, standards, and procedures for data collection, use, sharing, storage, and disposal, encompassing areas like data quality, integrity, security, and lifecycle management (classification, retention, disposal).
Data governance council: Develop and lead a cross-functional data governance council to drive data management and governance initiatives and decision-making
Provide legal counsel on data use: Advise stakeholders on legal and ethical considerations related to data analytics, machine learning, AI, data sharing, and international data transfers.
Ensure regulatory compliance: Stay current on and ensure compliance with global data protection laws (e.g., GDPR, CCPA) and industry best practices.
Foster a culture of data governance: Develop and deliver training programs, collaborate with cross-functional teams (engineering, product, marketing, security) to integrate data governance into business processes, and proactively identify areas for improvement.
Oversee data governance operations: This includes collaborating with data stewards and owners, establishing data definitions and standards, managing metadata, monitoring data quality metrics, and conducting audits to ensure compliance.
Privacy and Data Protection Projects: This role will include driving and advising on strategic initiatives related to privacy and data protection.
Qualifications:
J.D. degree from an accredited law school and membership in good standing in at least one U.S. state bar.
8+ years of legal experience with a focus on data privacy, data security, and data governance.
In-depth knowledge of global data protection laws and regulations, including GDPR, CCPA, and other relevant legislation.
Experience developing and implementing data governance frameworks.
Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment.
CIPP/US or CIPP/E certification is a plus.
Experience in the tech industry is preferred.

The cash compensation above includes base salary, on-target commission for employees in eligible roles, and annual bonus targets under HubSpot’s bonus plan for eligible roles.
