Editor, Local - Midwest

We are hiring a Midwest Editor to bolster our team in the region, which currently includes 7 cities: Chicago, Cleveland, Columbus, Des Moines, Detroit, Indianapolis and the Twin Cities.
Why it matters: This individual will work with a regional editor, other Midwest editors and reporters across the region to guide Axios’ coverage in the Midwest, connecting the dots between local, national, and global developments to help readers make sense of the narratives shaping their lives in their local communities.
Go deeper: We are looking for someone who cares deeply about the future of local news and is obsessed with innovative new ways to reimagine it. The ideal candidate will edit big-picture items from cities across the Midwest, be able to spot trends across the region and work comfortably in a remote-first environment. Primary responsibilities include:
Oversee and edit the production of daily local news coverage in Axios Local's cities in the Midwest.
Help conceive larger data-driven and analytical stories that are relevant across the Midwest with connections to national stories of importance.
Assist with research on important topics, events, and trends driving the conversation in the Midwest.
Write stories and newsletter items in partnership with reporters when needed.
Manage several reporters in cities across the Midwest.
The details: Ideal candidates will embody an entrepreneurial spirit, a passion for Axios’ mission and have the following skills and qualities:
Preferably is located in the Midwest (and is comfortable arguing about its boundaries).
Proven editing experience in a fast-paced newsroom. (Experience editing daily newsletters is a plus.)
A deep understanding of the Midwest and how Axios Local's core coverage areas of politics, business, tech and culture impact the region.
Ability to assign and manage multiple stories at once.
Confidence working in a remote-first environment.
Experience managing reporters at varying levels of seniority.
A belief in Smart Brevity as the core style of Axios.
Starting salary for this role is in the range of $87,500 - $110,000 and is dependent on numerous factors, including but not limited to location, work experience, and skills. This range does not include other compensation and benefits. Axios' compensation philosophy takes into account cost of labor differentials across the country. Because this is a remote-optional job posting, this salary range takes into account all possible locations within the United States, but candidates will only be eligible for the salary range for their location.
