Director of DevOps

Remote in the United States, Canada, Mexico, or Brazil

Mercy For Animals aims to end industrial animal agriculture by constructing a just and sustainable food system. We envision a world where animals are respected, protected, and free.

As a leading farmed animal advocacy organization, we know that achieving this goal requires a diverse, inclusive, and collaborative work environment—one that welcomes and sparks new perspectives and innovative ideas. If you are passionate about our mission, driven to make a big impact for animals, and eager to be part of a dedicated team, join us!

We currently seek a director of DevOps to join our technology team. In this role, you will lead a team of four web developers and one QA specialist, providing hands-on guidance and helping establish best practices in current and new technologies through code reviews and nurturing a team culture of technical excellence and innovation. The director will execute stakeholder projects across the organization in a WordPress development environment, as well as infrastructure projects for the DevOps team.

You will do invaluable work:

  • Provide technical leadership for web developers in the coding of WordPress (PHP) websites, plug-ins, and SaaS customizations, implementing code review processes for increased collaboration and knowledge sharing

  • Mentor web developers in current and new technologies, providing expertise through hands-on guidance and recommending professional-development resources

  • Write testable, scalable, and efficient code in a WordPress development environment in support of organizational projects

  • Establish and maintain coding and development standards, automating processes and standards where possible in collaboration with the DevOps engineer

  • Collaborate with the DevOps engineer in executing infrastructure projects, ensuring systems and processes are scalable, secure, and reliable

  • Collaborate with the QA specialist and developers of DevOps on establishing and implementing best practices throughout the software-development cycle

  • Collaborate cross-departmentally concerning UX/UI design standards and integrations, collecting data as needed

  • Stay current with technology trends, introducing new technologies where appropriate, and ensure the DevOps team spends 10% of its time on innovation

  • Create documentation for newly developed features or processes, for both the DevOps team and the organization

  • Adhere to all organizational policies and procedures

  • Perform any other duties assigned by team leader

Your qualifications will take our technology team to the next level:

  • Senior-level, hands-on experience in WordPress web-development, XHTML, CSS, JavaScript/AJAX, PHP, consuming and developing APIs, and change/release management processes

  • Minimum two years’ experience in a technical leadership role

  • Relevant certifications in computer science or a related field (a plus)

  • Experience in mobile-first development

  • Solid understanding of UX/UI and accessibility principles

  • Deep knowledge of the software-development cycle, with experience implementing and administering best practices in a highly collaborative environment

  • Problem-solving skills, with an ability to listen and understand stakeholders’ questions and needs

  • Ability to operate in a highly detailed and organized manner while remaining flexible as the organization’s needs and priorities change

  • Fluency in written and spoken English (Spanish or Portuguese as a first or second language a plus)

  • Availability for occasional travel for conferences or retreats

  • Comfort working autonomously or hyper-collaboratively in a fully remote environment

  • Strong organizational skills, with the ability to consistently meet deadlines (project-management experience a plus)

  • Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to work collaboratively at all levels of the organization

  • Commitment to the mission and values of Mercy For Animals

  • Commitment to continued personal and organizational growth in diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice principles
