About the Role
The Corporate Counsel is a generalist and will be responsible for supporting multiple business teams across many different areas of law. The Corporate Counsel will report to the Associate General Counsel based in Northern California. You will be part of a small, fast-moving, collaborative legal team that impacts the company’s internet platform and other aspects of its business. This position will work closely with cross-functional teams and will be a critical legal resource to the company.
What You’ll Do
Provide risk-adjusted advice to various stakeholders, including product, business development, finance, advertising, technical operations, security, engineering, expert operations, and people operations.
Monitor legal and regulatory changes that impact JustAnswer’s business and collaborate with business teams to incorporate changes into JustAnswer’s products and product strategy based on emerging risks and best practices.
Oversee outside counsel in connection with global litigation and disputes involving the company, including management of budgets, assisting with litigation strategy, reviewing and finalizing pleadings, and settlement agreements, and assist in building and maintaining a global litigation and regulatory function.
Provide practical, risk-adjusted legal advice on global privacy and AI laws and regulations, including GDPR, U.S. privacy laws, PIPEDA and EU AI Act, and partner directly with product, advertising, engineering, security, and other business teams to integrate privacy and AI considerations into current and future product developments and data flows.
Build, maintain, and scale privacy and AI compliance programs by developing innovative processes to support data mapping, consent management, privacy by design, risk assessments, and other program components.
Assist with subpoena responses and other third-party requests for information.
Support investigations and incident response related to privacy and security incidents.
Assist in training employees on legal issues, company policies, regulatory compliance, privacy, product, and security.
What We’re Looking For
6+ years of relevant legal experience with ability to work both independently and with a team. In-house experience is a plus.
Extensive litigation experience is strongly preferred.
Significant experience with some or all of the following: Counseling product and engineering teams on compliance with global laws and regulations, advising on global privacy laws and regulations and building global privacy compliance programs, and/or handling litigation and investigations, including familiarity with e-discovery.
Strong aptitude for working in a highly dynamic environment and desire to work on highly complex legal issues in new global regions.
Experience counseling companies with international operations is preferred.
Strong interpersonal skills, business judgment, strategic thinking and work ethic and must be dynamic and team oriented.
Ability to work efficiently with cross-functional teams and manage numerous complex projects simultaneously under tight deadline pressure.
Flexibility, background and experience to work on a broad variety of legal matters.
Familiarity with emerging AI laws and regulations is a plus.
