Aleknagik Technology, LLC is seeking candidates to support the Department of Justice (DOJ) Office of Justice Programs (OJP) Public Safety Officers' Benefits Program (PSOB) in providing timely and respectful legal assistance in the review of claims pertaining to fallen and injured officers, and their survivors in regards to federal line of duty death, disability, and education benefits that may be available to them.
It is expected that the candidates' work will reinforce the mission of providing services that relate to all PSOB death, disability, and educational assistance claims.
Tasks
Candidates will support the PSOB and its attorneys' enforcement of civil rights statutes by completing the following tasks:
- Assist contract attorneys and PSOB Program Counsel in conducting review and analysis of PSOB claims. As required by Counsel, provide a written recommendation to PSOB Counsel as to whether claims are legally sufficient in the format(s) prescribed by Counsel.
- Conduct legal review of PSOB education claims pursuant to the PSOB Act, implementing regulations, and other applicable law, and provide a written recommendation to PSOB Counsel as to whether claims are legally sufficient in the format(s) prescribed by Counsel.
- Assist contract attorneys and PSOB Counsel in maintaining a current and updated status of all PSOB claims or matters assigned, and complete reports as required by PSOB Counsel in the format(s) prescribed by Counsel.
- File, relocate, and or transfer PSOB claims between PSOB Office, Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA), PSOB Counsel, and OJP staff as designated by PSOB Counsel.
- Communicate with-BJA, PSOB, and other OJP staff designated by PSOB Counsel through email, informal briefings, written reports, legal memoranda, and other means as appropriate.
- Comply with technical direction provided by PSOB Counsel or BJA Director.
This position is remote but should be local to the DC area.
Education/Experience
Paralegal Law Clerk I
- Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution or a Paralegal Certificate or equivalent.
- At least one (1) year of paid law clerk or paralegal experience in a law office or government setting providing legal research, analysis or docket management.
Paralegal Law Clerk II
- Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution or a Paralegal Certificate or equivalent.
- At least two (2) years of paid law clerk or paralegal experience in a law office or government setting providing legal research, analysis or docket management.
Paralegal Law Clerk III
- Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution or a Paralegal Certificate or equivalent.
- At least three (3) years of paid law clerk or paralegal experience in a law office or government setting providing legal research, analysis or docket management.
